US General Curtis Scaparrotti, the high-level NATO general, declared his concern about the increased Russian influence in Balkan, where, according to him, the USA have lost their focus.

Scaparrotti, who is also commander of the American troops in Europe, declared that USA and NATO are working together to respond to the biggest security threats in Europe: violent extremism and Russia’s efforts for destabilization.

Moscow, which doesn’t see Balkan’s EU and NATO integration as a positive development, has increased its influence efforts, mainly by using Serbs in Serbia and Bosnia.

Scaparrotti said that Russia is trying to cause turmoil in Balkan through disinformation campaigns. The US has expressed its concern also about an Emergency Center that Russia manages in Nis, southern Serbia.

Military analysts see this as a camouflaged military base that Kremlin has raised to survey America’s interests in Balkan. Moscow insists that its personnel should receive diplomatic status, and denies other activities besides treating emergencies.
