The former US Ambassador to the NATO, Douglas Lute, responded to the request of Donald Trump for having allies increase their contributions in the world’s biggest military alliance.

Trump sent a letter to Germany, Belgium, Norway, Canada and other partners, expressing the disappointment of Americans that other countries didn’t increase their contributions to NATO.

Trump was harsher with Merkel’s government in Germany, saying that others follow their example and pay less.

Lute says that only 8 NATO members contribute with 2% of the GDP for defence.
