The West supports referendum for Macedonia’s new name

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel; the Austrian chancellor, Sebastian Kurz; the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, will all visit Macedonia this week, giving a strong signal that the West supports the September 30th referendum.

If the vote goes in favor of the agreement with Greece,  Macedonia will then be freed from a serious obstacle on the European-Atlantic integration.

Merkel will be the first German leader that would have visited Macedonia in almost two decades.

Macedonia has been facing vetoes and blockades by Greece for decades, due to the dispute about Macedonia’s name. Greece says that “Macedonia” of the Great Alexander is actually their northern province, called with the same name. Both countries reached an agreement this year, with Greece allowing their neighbors to be called Northern Macedonia. But it has to be by confirmed the people first, through a nation wide referendum.
