Tirana’s battle with plastic bags

The entire world has launched a campaign for cleaning rivers and seas from plastic waste.

Nearly half of the waste that pollutes our waters comes from single-use products, such as plastic bags.

The EU planned a strategy against plastic waste in Albania and published it this January.

On the website of the EU delegation in Tirana, there is a video for raising awareness about the pollution that we are causing each day to our environment.

13 million tons of plastics end up in seas and oceans each day.

The waste has a negative impact on the biodiversity and people’s health.

Albania passed a law which fines businesses that produce, sell or import plastic bags with no environmental protection standards.

In some areas of the Tirana River, plastic bags can be seen attached on trees and branches. Environmentalists say that trying to remove them is an impossible feat.
