President Nishani returns law amends for media: “Damages independence of Public Television”

The Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, has returned the law amends for
audiovisual media in Albania, passed on March 10th 2016, saying that
they go against the Constitution.
The President says that if the next elections for the General Director of the Public Television will fail for three consequent rounds with a qualified majority, the fourth and the fifth rounds will continue with a simple majority. While for removing this director for duty, a qualified majority is needed.
“This solution might allow the election of a person who enjoys the consent of the majority”, the arguments add.
The President says the law takes powers before due, because the new rules for the next Public Television Director will be have effect also on the elections that are yet to come.
