While there is speculation that the USA could be in favor of dividing Kosovo, in order to find a solution with Serbia, Josip Juratovic, a German lawmaker of the ruling coalition, said that the stance of the EU will not be influenced by Washington’s decisions.
“The position of Brussels regarding the relations between Serbia and Kosovo will be decided exclusively based on rules of the EU, without being influenced by the opinion of USA”, the Croatian-born German lawmaker said for BIRN.
He underlined once again that the EU is not willing to import border disputes, such as the existing ones between Slovenia and Croatia.
On the other hand, the former EU envoy for Kosovo, Wolfgang Petritsch, fears a cold conflict in the area, and that the new composition of the EU may ignore the current issues, especially due to the elections of the European Parliament in 2019.
He mentions the possibility of what he calls “a cosmetic border correction” for resolving the Kosovo issue. “Time is essential in this case”, he said for the newspaper “Danas”.
“I am aware that an administrative correction of the current borders could cause more problems, if there is no close cooperation between the EU and the OSCE”, he said.
