New Tirana Mayor, Basha starts firing staff

At least 40 inspectors from the Terrain Verification Department at the
General Directory of Local Taxes and Fees in the Tirana Municipality
have been fired this Friday.

In the letter that communicates the decision, signed by the director Arben Kau, the motivation is “ for inefficiency and failing to make good use of the working hours, not realizing the same revenues as during 2010 and for poor performance”.

The fired employees declared that this action is politically motivated.

“As soon as the new Director and the Operation Director came in, they asked us to implement the contracts. During this time we implemented all contracts and handed them over. Today they told us that we are fired. We don’t know the real cause of this action. The contracts for which the subjects have the will to sign, who agree with the fees of the municipal council, are all in place. The real motives are political, and we will continue the procedures at the Prosecution”, declared Ferdinand Banushi, head of the Parking Office.

“The dismissal was made on political grounds, only because we have had politically based positions. I have been a Central Election Commission member, Zonal Election Commission member and vote counter. Everything is political. Not only they are firing us, but they are offending us every day and we feel threatened”, declared the specialist Aurel Veizaj.

“Obviously, I have been fired for political reasons. This happens only in countries like Somalia, where there is no state”, declared Florian Shima, head of the Tax Control Office.

The persons who have been fired declared that the dismissal order is against the Labor Code, which provides that the employer should warn the employee three months before.

Contacted by Top-Channel, the Municipality Press Office says that:

“The General Directory of Local Taxes and Fees at the Tirana Municipality decided to dismiss 51 inspectors, based on the poor performance and for favoring informality. The General Directory of Local Taxes and Fees analyzed the 7 months work for each of the inspectors and noted that they have not fulfilled their duties by not making the inspections as the law requires, causing the Municipality debt to increase”.
