According to the Institution of Statistics, exports for the first two months of the year increased with 21.5%, while imports, on the other hand, were increased with 14.5%.

The trade deficit for February is 22 billion ALL, and exports cover only 52% of imports.

Detailed data show that the export growth is mainly influenced by construction materials and the manufacturing industry. Energy exports from KESH, thanks to the improved hydric situation, has also had their impact.

Albanian exports grew during the past to years due to the lower price of oil and minerals. Although the situation has improved, Albanian remains the country with the lowest export level in the region, which shows its weak competitiveness ability.

In a report published by the end of 2017, the IMF notes that one of the reasons why Albania has the lowest in the region are high corruption, weak infrastructure and institutions, complex tax system and due to the difficulty of companies to access credit.

According to the IMF, these factors hamper the economy from becoming more competitive by stopping exports and company growth.
