Countryman: Doubts on CEC decisions

US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Thomas Countryman,
spoke on the May 8th local elections, declaring that the decisions taken
by the institutions were equivocal.

Countryman congratulated the Albanian people for the great participation in these elections, which went fairly well in all districts, except Tirana.

“I congratulate the Albanian people for the massive participation in these elections. The process went well, except Tirana. We expressed our doubts on the legal base of the Central Election Commission decision”, Countryman declared.

The US official appealed all Albanian political parties to show maturity, and he welcomed the option of reassessing CEC decisions by an international institution.

“It is important for the parties to act with dignity, to restrain themselves and not incite violence. We have no comment on the result, but we must wait the Electoral College. On the other hand, there’s nothing bad if the parties address to the Commission of Venice”, Countryman added.
