Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama mentioned today the report of the group “Reporters without Borders” on the freedom of the media in Albania, calling it ‘worrying’ the fact that the freedom of the media is under threat all over the world, and that measures will be taken to improve the media environment and to protect the rights of journalists.

“The issue of freedom of information is one of the most important today, so I want to thank Reporters Without Borders for their report. We will analyze it carefully, consult with all stakeholders and take further action to improve the media environment, protect freedom of information, fight disinformation and strengthen the rights of journalists.

“We are very concerned by the main finding of the report: that media freedom is under threat all over the world. The Albanian government is ready to undertake all the necessary responsibilities to help break this trend”, writes the Prime Minister.

The  report stated that Albania has marked a deterioration in press freedom, ranking it last among the countries of the region and candidate states for the European Union.

In the Index of 180 countries, Albania ranks 99th, as the organization “Reporters Without Borders” estimates that the environment for freedom of the press in Albania “is very difficult”. It has lost three places compared to a year ago, when it was listed 96th.

“In Albania, editorial independence is threatened by partisan rules. Journalists fall victim to organized crime and sometimes police violence, fueled by the government’s failure to protect them”, it is added.
