While Mike Pence prepares for his visit to Montenegro, where he will
meet with Western Balkan leaders, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary,
Hoyt Brian Yee, guarantees once again that the US commitment remains
strong in Balkan.

These comments come after the US cuts on the State Department may minimize Washington’s influence to these fragile democracies, exposed to Russian influence.

Yee says for Voice of America they will cooperate with Moscow as regards terrorism, but for areas where they have different opinions, US will defend its values and those of its allies. “And this is what we are doing right now”, Yee said.

“We are taking measures to strengthen these states against malign influences, even from Russia or other factors, making sure that Moscow and other actors as well will not be able to exert their negative power on their foreign and internal policies.

Yee says that Russia’s intervention in Montenegro should concern any democracy in Europe. There are evidence that Moscow is ready to interfere with elections and to even bring down governments brought to power by democratic way.

The USA have expressed concern about how Russia is operating in Serbia, a country where many pro-western groups say that is being used by Kremlin as a base to go against US interests in Balkan.
