All 140 Parliament Members of Albania voted in favor of the Justice Reform, with absolute consensus. Present in Parliament were the EU and US Ambassadors, and also the Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha.

The much debated parliamentary session of July 21st started almost three hours late, because the Democratic Party MPs wanted more time to inspect the final draft.

The Chairman of the Justice Reform Special Commission, Socialist MP Fatmir Xhafaj, thanked the people involved in this draft, saying that it will bring a professional system to Albania, which will act independently from political influence.

After him, the leader of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, praised the consensus achieved for the Justice reform and added that politics had denied too much justice to the people of Albania in the past 25 years.

MP Mesila Doda from the Party for Justice, Unity and Integrity, asked the Parliament Members if they were scared to vote this reform, saying the PJIU members were not. She added that today’s voting was a patriotic deed of national values.

The Vice Chairman of the Justice Reform Special Commission, Democratic Party MP Oerd Bylykbashi, said that thanks to the opposition, the Parliament voted a very good draft today, much better than the one the majority wished to pass on September 2015. Bylykbashi thanked the Venice Commission, saying that this draft would have been very bad without their contribution.

Prime Minister Edi Rama held the last speech. Different from other times, his speech was short. He appealed the Parliament Members one final time to vote in favor of the reform, and thanked the US and EU ambassadors for their contribution:

“I want to thank all friends of Albania, especially ambassadors Donald Lu and Romana Vlahutin. It doesn’t matter either we are here on everybody’s good will or not. There will be no easier steps in this process than the one we took today. Corrupted judges and prosecutors will be removed by the vetting process. Wishing the Democratic Party even more victories like the one of yesterday, I invite all of you to vote the Justice Reform”.
