Veliaj: “People are putting a tent over our sidewalk, and demand compensation for ‘car wash’ business”

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, declared that the citizens whose houses are affected by the construction of a new section of Tirana’s Big Ring Road will be compensated properly through the expropriation procedures. For illegal constructions, the government will offer 3 years of rent and social homes.

Veliaj said that the area has been squatted by illegal businesses such as car washes, betting shops and other buildings that were built eight stores up without permit.

“I understand when someone builds because he is in need, but whoever builds eight stores is not someone in need. Rather than building schools, we must pay someone who says he owns the land where he illegally built an 8-store building. The biggest protesters are the betting shops. Why should people who don’t bet, pay for a betting shop that is illegally built? They place a tent over a sidewalk, and they say ‘this is a car wash’. What should we compensate, our sidewalk? Should we take money away from kindergartens and give it to this man with an orange tent? The sidewalk was ours. We will pay those with houses. If they don’t have a single letter ”, Veliaj declared.
