The meeting with the representatives of the Transparency International Albania and the Free Thought Forum was an occasion for the Albanian President to repeat appeals for a calm electoral campaign.

The President stated that the situation has slipped out of control with violent physical encounters that have spurred after verbal violence.

“If there is violence, political parties are responsible for stimulating it through uncivilized debates. I appeal them to lower the tension and to stimulate tolerance. I appeal the candidates to compete only with programs”, Topi declared.

Although shadowed by graver events of the political actuality, the transparency of the political campaigns’ financial sources remains a chronic problem. President Topi emphasized the necessity for making transparent the financial sources of the electoral campaign, as the law provides.

“This matter has been continually discussed, turning it into a chronic problem. But there have been only words and it leaves a lot to be desired”, Topi said.

The Transparency International Albania leaders and the “Free Thought Forum” pointed out the significance of transparency of political parties’ financial sources, to prevent corruption by private entrepreneurs who cover electoral campaign expenses informally.

TIA presented the details of a project that is observing the implementation of the law on political parties’ financial sources. The Free Thought Forum presented a study performed during the latest central elections, with the help of Soros and the Institution for Searches and Alternative Developments. This study confirms the informality of political campaigns’ financial sources.
