Top Story: “Budget 2018, money laundering or getting closer with Europe?”

The Democratic Party and the Socialist Movement for Integration, now united in opposition, declared that they will vote against the Budget 2018, because it will be used by the government to launder crime money.

The Socialists consider this budget an important step that will get Albania closer to Europe. But who is right about it? To discuss it, Top Story had Ervin Bushati from the SP and Florion Mima from the DP as this Tuesday’s guests.

Bushati defended the budget and said that it is a clean result of the reforms undertaken by the government during the first mandate. He said that the opposition is launching unfounded and non serious accusations, which damage the country and the economy when they are not addressed to judiciary institutions.

The Socialist MP said that there have been discussions even inside the Socialist Party regarding the concessions and PPP projects, but every agreement will be made public with transparency, that’s why there is no need for them to be discussed in Parliament.

Florion Mima, from the DP, mentioned the Europol report for the cannabis traffic in Europe.

“There is an official report from Europol which says that the value of the cannabis market in Europe is 24 billion Euro, and most of it comes from Albania. If we follow this, it means that the crime’s budget is 12 billion Euros, 110% of the Albanian GDP. The cocaine goes to 2.3 billion, without mentioning other crime activities”, he said.

Mima said that these figures show the true power of the criminal economy in the country, and that the IMF is also concerned about the PPP projects.
