On Monday September 17th, the Durres-Kukes road, (called the “Nation’s Road” since it connects Albania with Kosovo), will start applying a toll payment system. Police officers are present to guard the booths.

A few months ago, on March 31st, 2018, local citizens attacked the toll booths and destroyed them after the private company that has the management suddenly started implementing a 5 EUR payment for each passage.

After a series of negotiations, it was decided that local citizens who live around the area should pay a reduced fee, 100 ALL per passage, (0,80 EUR), if their vehicle is registered in the local areas. For other cars it will still be 5 Euros.

To avoid possible queues, there are 10 toll booths in total, which are separate for citizens and for public transportation lines licensed in Kukes.

The company that manages the toll system says that besides employing 200 Kukes citizens, they will also realize a series of social and local projects in the next four years.
