Two inspectors from the Construction Inspecting Office in Tirana Mayor’s Office, one municipal police officer and one realtor were taken under arrest this Monday night, during an operation code named “The floor above” by a task force between Tirana’s Prosecutor Office and Tirana Police Department.

According to the police, the three City Hall employees had been under surveillance for more than two months, after citizen complaints had been received by the police about bribes for illegal constructions.
“Initial investigation results show that these employees, cooperating between the three of them, have demanded amounts of money starting from 300.000 to 350.000 lek (2100-2400 euros), to allow illegal constructions around the city of Tirana. Adem Cemurati, Agostin Lekgegaj and Ylli Bala were caught on the act and therefore arrested on charges of passive corruption by a public official.” as Alma Katragjini, the police spokesperson told to the press.

The three Tirana City Hall employees will be under investigation for a broader corruptive activity, which includes illegal construction favors in Tirana, mainly on new floors added to existing apartment buildings. After the corruption charges, they will also face the power abuse charges.
