Prosecution’s declaration against Rama. PM: “As if it’s written by a political party”

The Prosecution of Serious Crimes reacted a few minutes after Edi Rama released a declaration about the former Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri.

Prosecutors say that political declarations have never and will never intimidate their investigative activity.

The Prosecution of Serious Crimes insists that they have all legal circumstances for ordering Tahiri’s arrest.

“The declaration of the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, goes against what was declared for the past two years, the judiciary reform. The Prime Minister took the role of a judge, an attribute he cannot have by Constitution and by law. This is a clear signal that the fight against high-level corruption, the purpose of which was the approval of the Judiciary Reform, will be controlled by politics”, the Prosecution states.

The Prosecution refers to the case of Croatia, in which investigations led to the sentencing of former Prime Minister, Ivo Sander, with four and a half years in prison.

Rama reacted immediately, denying that there are efforts to intimidate the Prosecution. “The Prosecution’s job is not to feed political debates with communications that seem written from political party leaders. Lawmakers are not notaries of the Prosecution, but have the constitutional obligation to read and hear the explanations of the institution in question, and of course, take its own decision. The Prosecution must do the job given to them by the Constitution, and leave political opinions to the public. Encouraging once again a serious and quick investigation, the majority has given the Prosecution strong support to go to the end of this investigation”, Rama said.

In unison, the opposition condemned the Prime Minister’s accusations against the Prosecution. Lulzim Basha asked “the EU and USA, and other western countries which contributed with the drafting of the judiciary reform, to pressure the Prime Minister and make him abandon this campaign of threats against the judiciary”.

The leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Monika Kryemadhi, said that “Albanians expected their Prime Minister to allow justice reveal the truth, but he turned into a protector of crime. This is a public testimony of his strategy to turn the Albanian judiciary into an instrument of criminals, and not an institution that fights crime and corruption, serving citizens”.
