The OSCE representative to Tirana, Harlem Desir, expressed his concern about press freedom in Albania, after the government called 44 websites to register as businesses.
“Governments should not impose obligatory registration for online media, as a precondition for their job. This would have a negative effect. This practice could limit the citizens’ access to various sources of information”, Desir declared.
The representative appeals Albanian authorities to look for other alternatives for implementing the anti-slander law.
“It is important to have more information about the government’s measures and the criteria on which those specific 44 websites were chosen”, Desir added.
