Albanian Interior Ministry changed the birth certificates model some days ago.

All certificates produced recently were distributed at Civilian Registrar Offices all over the country without the nationality specified, as they used to. From this Monday, citizens have noticed this change and some of them have also faced problems.

According to the Registrar Office, the citizens with Greek nationality want it specified on the birth certificate. When asked about this new model, interior Ministry sources said that nationality is not needed on certificates, because they are to be used only within the country’s borders. Meanwhile, there have been reactions by Greek consulates.

In Gjirokaster, Greek Consulate did not accept the new certificates that do not have the nationality on it. According to some citizens, Greek officials said that new certificates are not approved from the Greek Foreign Ministry. Right after this rejection, the OMONIA organization reacted with a press release, saying that the new certificate model violates human rights, therefore they asked the Albanian state to correct them.
