Today at the Foreign Committee of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, has officially presented the progress report for the countries that aspire to join the EU, including Albania.

Mogherini said that the Council decided to open the accession negotiations for Albania and Macedonia.

“The college approved the annual enlargement package for Western Balkan and Turkey. It is in our interest to have a successful enlargement policy. Western Balkan is Europe and it will be part of the EU in the future. It is the best for us and for our citizens. Every country is assessed based on personal merits and progress with the reforms. During the last year, our Balkan partners undertook a very important reform. The Council decided to open the accession negotiations for Albania and Macedonia”, Mogherini declared.

Johannes Hahn added that the European Commission recognizes the progress made by Macedonia and Albania, which led to the opening of the accession negotiations.
