Kosovo Political Crisis Resolution

It seems that Kosovo political crisis will soon be solved, since Behgjet Pacolli declared that he withdraws his candidacy for President of Kosovo.

After many negotiations, the new candidate was finally announced. She is a woman, whose name brought consensus for the leading political forces, Democratic Party’s (DPK) with Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi and Democratic League’s (DLK) with their leader Isa Mustafa.
Her name is Atifete Jahjaga, currently Vice General Director of Kosovo State Police.

For two days in a row, the leaders of DPK, DLK and Behgjet Pacolli’s ANK (Alliance for New Kosovo), with the mediation of international officials, held consequent meetings looking for a solution that would save the country from the political crisis, started after Constitutional Court’s decision on Mr.Pacolli.

Former Kosovo President, Behgjet Pacolli, declared that a consensus had been found for overcoming the political stalemate. He said that the agreement negotiated between him, Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi and DLK leader Isa Mustafa avoided early elections in Kosovo.

“I withdrew my candidacy for President of Kosovo. I took this step with high responsibility, because it would be a fatal mistake to impede the country’s progress with early elections”, Mr. Pacolli said.

Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi also confirmed this agreement.
“We agreed to establish a commission for the electoral reforms, for drawing the Constitutional amendments so that the next President gets elected form the people’s votes”, Thaçi said.

DLK leader, Isa Mustafa valued the agreement and declared that he totally supports it.

US ambassador, Christopher Dell expressed his esteem for the Presidential candidate, Atifete Jahjaga.

“She is a brave officer and I am sure that she will protect the Constitution of Kosovo as President. She will lead an office that faces many challenges and for this she needs support from everyone”, Dell declared.
The DPK, DLK and ANK consensus provides that during the next year, new Presidential elections will be held directly with the people’s votes. In order to not infringe the actual Constitution, there is another candidate, except Jahjaga, who will formally run for Kosovo President.

As for DPK and ANK, their governing coalition will continue to exist, while Mustafa’s DLK repeated their decision for supporting the opposition.
