The Health Minister, Petrit Vasili, declared that the draft-law for
allowing transplant procedures in Albania for tissues, cells and organs,
which is being discussed in the government, is planned in full
accordance with EU standards and legislations.

Asked about the controversy that it spurred in the Commission, about the criteria of transplant procedures, Minister Vasili emphasized that the draft-law does not limit the activity of private hospitals, and that standards are the same for both health sectors.

“This is the most consistent law with the European directives. It sanctions healthy alternatives for donating cells and tissues, and it establishes a detailed and articulated system for the way how it will work in Albania”, Vasili declared.

The Health Minister declared that Albania does not need debates that have been going on for years around the world, but it needs to implement this law as soon as possible, in order to make organ transplantation legal.

For the first time it is being discussed in Albania to create a bank of human organs, cells and tissues that are individually donated, in order to help patients if they need kidney, bone marrow or other organs transplantations, which would save them from illnesses considered incurable up to now.
