“Gërdeci”, OSCE criticizes Albanian justice

OSCE ambassador in Tirana, Eugen Wollfarth, criticized the Albanian justice for failing to proceed with the Gerdeci trial.

The ambassador underlined that the absence of the lawyers in the process is showing the weaknesses of rule of law.

“We are concerned for the fact that this process is not continuing in full accordance with the principles of a just trial, incarnated in the Constitution and respective laws. The accused have the right to be defended, but the absence of the lawyers is an abuse for every justice system”, Wollfarth declared.

He underlined that three years after the gravest tragedy in the post-communist period, the process is still far from being over.

“I appeal all respective authorities to make all necessary attempts for guaranteeing a just and public trial for this case, within a reasonable period of time”, Wollfarth added.

The appeal of the OSCE ambassador was made one day after the next session of this case continued for only 20 minutes, due to the absence of the lawyers.
