More than one year after the inauguration of the construction process,
the Austrian consortium announced the end of the first construction
phase.

Prime Miniter Sali Berisha was the main guest of the inauguration ceremony in Ashta, Bushat. According to the calculations, the positive effects for the construction of this hydropower plant, where for the first time is being used the modern turbine technology, an investment of 200 million EUR, will not only affect the growth of electrical power production, but it will also help employment and economic growth.

Valuing it as a concrete example for realizing the objective “Albania, a developed country”, Prime Minister Berisha declared that electrical power is one of main priorities of his government.

“Electric power is the foundation of all foundations for the development of a country. It is the driving force of all sectors. We are determined to make everything possible so that the great water sources of this country might return into great energetic values for Albania and the Albanians. The hydropower plant is a diamant, and will remain as such in the crown of hundreds of other plants that will be built in Albania”, Berisha declared.

The government has given permissions for the construction of 220 hydropower plants from the private sector, and according to the Prime Ministers, work is continuing intensively in 36 of them. However, the final goal is the construction of other such great works, in order to return Albania into an energetic regional center.

“We remain determined to make all efforts for encouraging the construction of more than 443 hydropower plants in this country. Albania’s waters must turn into energetic values for all Albanian citizens. Albania has all possibilities for becoming a small energetic superpower in the region. Energy is our greatest priority”, Berisha declared.

According to the agreement that the Albanian government has signed with the Austrian consortium, the Ashta hydropower plant will start to produce energy within 2012, and the builders say that it will supply with energy 100,000 Albanian families.
