In Albania there are many areas with high levels of pollution, where
matters like oil, cement, steal or copper might cause major accidents.

Our country, financially supported by the European Union, has prepared a draft law for controlling dangers from major industrial accidents that might be caused by lethal substances.

“There is a massive pollution. There are private companies that are working very well, with plans for environmental rehabilitation. But there are other companies that must respond with the same responsibility”, said the Minister of Environment, Fatmir Mediu.

Although the European Union has given from 2008 to 2010 around 105 million Euros for the environment, Albania is still facing major problems.

“From 2008 to 2010, EU assistance has been very generous. EU has assisted Albania with 105 million Euros for the environment. Albania’s commitment in European Standards of this area is measured by its actions, by the adoption of adequate legislations, the planning of natural and human sources. I wanted to underline the implementation of such projects”, said EU ambassador in Tirana, Ettore Sequi.

EU ambassador in Tirana did not clarify how and in which projects were this money spent, and how did they affect the Albanian environment. However, he promised that Europe will continue to help Albania, but our future depends on us.
