EP, debate for border control

The European Parliament rejected the establishment of border controls, except in any extraordinary circumstances.

The debates were held in the plenary room of Strasbourg, where some Parliament Members, such as the Dutch Daniel van der Stoep, defended Denmark’s initiative by arguing that border control is a successful means for stopping undesired elements to cross borders.

The argument of Van der Stoep was that a sovereign country has the obligation to protect the interests of its people, pretending that the enlargement of the Schengen Zone has increased the number of foreign criminals who enter Western Europe’s richest countries.

Even more direct was William Dartmouth, from Independence Party, Great Britain, who is quoted by “Deutsche Welle” of saying that not only the Eurozone, but even the Schengen Area is going towards its doom. Three other MPs, the German Manfred Weber, from CSU, defended the Schengen Area not without criticizing the head of states and of governments for simplifying border controls in the future.

Weber appealed politics to make clear that border controls do not necessarily bring more safety. Despite the contradictions, the Commission approved a common resolution that expresses the regret of the European Parliament for the desire of some member countries to return border controls.

“Such a movement is not justified with the arrival of refugees. We will approve specific rules from the Commission this autumn, for specifying the next conditions of border controls”, the document says.
