French archaeologists and scholars are registering all details for the Mosaic of the Paleo-Christian Basilica unearthed in Elbasan.
Specialists from the Monuments of Culture have opened the mosaic in the city’s centre and they are documenting all the details. According to the French scholar, this is one of the best mosaics in Albania and beyond.
“It is a complicated but very interesting basilica we found part of the architecture, liturgy, but the mosaic is the most important part. We also found part of the dome. The iconography is rich with animals and excellent panels, but especially with a great variety of colours”, said Marie Patricia Raynaud, from the Scientific Center of Researches, Paris.
The mosaic was unearthed in 2007 and it could be left where it is, according to Raynaud. No need to remove it and put it in museums, because it is still in very good conditions.
