In a statement to the media, Foreign Relations Secretary in the Democratic Party, Arben Kashahu, said that leaving Albanian citizens abroad without permission or help to return, is irresponsible and criminal.

He further demanded that these citizens be repatriated as it is a constitutional obligation of the government.

“The Democratic Party is following with concern the situation created on the land borders between Albania and Greece, as well as between Albania and Montenegro. Hundreds of Albanian citizens are not allowed to enter Albanian territory, and according to information we have, there are no obstacles from our neighboring countries.

“The closure of air, sea or land borders as a precautionary measure for the spread of coronavirus, cannot serve as an excuse for the state to abandon Albanian citizens. They cannot be left in the streets without help and in scandalous conditions. This is happening now with the Albanians on the Greek and Montenegrin border. It is happening with the Albanians who are abandoned everywhere in Europe, in Italy, in Germany, in France, in Spain, in England.

“It is illegal and absurd not to allow Albanian citizens to enter their homeland, to return to their homes, their children or parents. Concerns have come to the Democratic Party that the overwhelming majority of them have been in the cold for more than 24 hours, without food and without any help from the state. This is irresponsibility. This is criminal.

“The Democratic Party considers the abandonment of Albanians outside the country’s borders as a flagrant violation of their fundamental rights and freedoms by the government of the Albania itself. This act contravenes the Constitution and the laws of the country and is not justified by the situation created”, stated Kashahu among other things.
