High level of domestic violence cases have pushed the government to intervene with a draft-project that is being reviewed by the Parliamentary commissions.

There are many new features in this law, but what stands out is that it goes beyond the matrimony institution. It covers not only women abused by their spouses, but also by boyfriends.

Another amendment is the “Immediate Protection Order”. Police had noted that most of the violence occurred between the moment when women filed the protection request and to 24 to 48 hours later, when the court order was issued. The amendment will offer immediate protection, from the moment she requests protection and until the court has decided if they will confirm it or not.

Another new feature of the law is about minors. For the first time the protection will be extended to children as well as mothers, even if they have not been abused.

The draft law proposed by the Health Ministry foresees the establishing of emergency centers for immediate treatment of domestic violence victims.
