The Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, although he hopes that the EU starts the negotiations with Albania right away, he says for the Irish Times that there are a series of problems that could make the country not achieve this goal.
“Albania is probably the first country in modern history without a supreme court, without a constitutional court, without a general prosecutor, with a parliament with unfilled seats, and a prime minister that rules by decree without any institutional limit to his power,” Basha told The Irish Times.
Basha underlined that the Democrats have given their support to the judiciary reform, but he accuses the government of undermining and abusing the process.
“As a result, we have a paralyzed judiciary . . . and no politician or organized crime figure has faced justice. On the contrary, a number of high-level corruption cases have been sidetracked under government influence, securing impunity for the accused.”
