US ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, attended a visit at Shkoder, meeting local executives and the Mayor Lorenc Luka, also the Shkoder district prefect.

The ambassador’s meeting with the local executives continued behind closed doors, but sources say that during this meeting, the ambassador has thanked the local leaders for confronting the flood situation and he was also updated with the recent city’s problems and developments.

The American ambassador emphasized the significance of these local elections.

“This is my second visit in Shkoder and I believe that you remember the circumstances of my first visit. I was very pleased when I found a much improved situation. I have traveled around the country and have had the possibility to meet different Mayors that represent Democratic and Socialist parties. Their work is impressive. This is the most important matter that the US wants to emphasize about May 8th local elections. Some people have asked about the US opinion, if these elections will have a national influence, or it’s just a local matter. My answer is that any kind of election will have national influence. But when we speak about elections in Shkoder, what the citizen must ask is ‘what will they do for me who live in this city?’ I think that this is the most important. The candidates should explain what they have done and what they will do”, Arvizu declared.

Asked by Top Channel about the pre-election political situation, he replied: “I don’t want to talk about politics, because this evening I am invited at ‘Top Story’. You can hear my political comments there”.

The ambassador has attended other meetings with the Foreign Languages Faculty in Shkoder and many businessmen. The ambassador preferred to walk on foot from the prefecture building to the City Hall, accompanied by local executives.
