The President of Albania, Ilir Meta, was received today in a special audience by Pope Francis, at his Holy See in the Vatican.

Meta expressed his deep gratitude for the special contribution made by the Holy See to Albania’s spiritual recovery, especially after the long communist isolation.

Meta thanked the Pope especially for the sublimation of Mother Theresa, through her sanctification.

Pope Francis valued the strength and dedication of Albanians for their spiritual recovery after the religious ban, praised the achievements made so far and expressed the extraordinary impressions that were created during his historic visit in our country.

“I have rarely seen as many young people as during my visit in Tirana. Everything must be done so that they don’t leave their country”, Pope Francis said.

President Meta thanked the Holy Father for His support to Kosovo and discussed with him about the close relations between George Skanderbeg and the Vatican; the importance of religious co-existence in Balkan; and the current issues with emigration.

Pope Francis recalled his visit to Tirana: “When I was asked by journalists why I had chosen Tirana as my first destination for my first visit in Europe, I said that it was because I wanted to give a message”.
