Albanian historians against population registration

Population registration on ethnic and religious basis was strongly
opposed by the politicians, the historians and representatives of the
Foreign Ministry.

Sabri Godo asked the Prime Minister Berisha to interfere and oppose this
process that will be used by the Greeks in a very near future.

“I would like the Prime Minister Berisha, the Foreign Minister and all
concerning authorities to interfere, because this has a second purpose,
and it is not being hidden at all. You can see the declarations released
by the Greek Foreign Ministry who greet the initiative of Mr. Berisha
and the Albanian government, urging them to complete this process as
soon as possible. Why this urgency? Why should the Greek government mind
if we do the population registration or not? They want to increase the
number of Albanian citizens with Greek nationality in Albania, which
serves to their future plans. This must be stopped at any cost, and
needs the contribution of everyone”, Godo declared.

The Director of the State Archive, Nevila Nika, said that few are the
families that know their remote origin, and everything can be verified
in this archive.

“Few Albanian families have a family tree to know their remote origin
with precision. There is deformation and it is very bad that only a few
people know their origin”, Nika said.

This registration is being encouraged with insistence by the Greek state, since it will create fictive numbers.

“The country has been swept by this debate for months now, involving
politicians, analysts and common citizens. This kind of engagement has
brought an important result: the postponement of the population
registration and its enabling a proper registration”, said the Director
of Minorities and Human Rights Protection in the Foreign Ministry,
Qirjako Qirko.

One third of the Albanians have emigrated abroad in the last 20 years,
causing many emigrant children to not know the Albanian language, a
problem that requires solution.

Today, on the National Martyrs Day, the Red and Black Alliance petition
against population registration on ethnic and religion basis has been
signed by the family of the Hero of the People, Musa Fratari.

The Red and Black Alliance will continue to ask support for this petition by the families of the war heroes and martyrs.
