What Socialists see as solution to Shkodra’s electoral stalemate

The Socialist Majority is still having a hard time finding a solution to the stalemate created in Shkodra by Valdrin Pjetri, their candidate for city Mayor, who withdrew from accepting his 4-year-term after the opposition published a document showing that he had been sentenced in Italy for drug traffic, almost 20 years ago.

Valdrin Pjetri came out of the elections of June, in which he ran without any opponent since the opposition boycotted them. The president also issued a decree repealing the date of the elections in June and postponed them to October 13th. The Socialists considered the President’s decision invalid and went through with the elections, declaring Valdrin Pjetri the Mayor.

But now that he has resigned, the opposition keeps insisting that the real elections are those of October 13th. SP, according to information received by Top Channel, see the solution through an Electoral Code amendment, which would remove the President’s competence to decree the elections, and pass it to the Central Election Commission.

The Socialists do have the votes in Parliament for this amend, and that would give them a solution not only for Shkodra but also for the municipality of Vora. The President, on the other hand, insists that the only solution for Shkodra and for Albania is October 13th.
