Saranda, construction boom

The town of Saranda is experiencing a real boom of legal and illegal new constructions.

This boom was unleashed before the local elections, and it is still going on now, when the new Mayor has not started working yet. The new constructions, sometimes eight stores high, right by the seaside, have exceeded the permit limits. Many other constructions are creating a situation that is not positive for tourism. The staff members of the new Mayor say that the situation is with the constructions is one of their main concerns.

One staff member says that the permits were given for electoral purposes, including permissions for building in public areas, adding entire stores to existent apartment buildings, and closing one eye in front of new illegal constructions or to those that exceed the permits.

Meanwhile, Saranda Construction Inspectorate says that there are only seven constructions without permissions. The Urban Office refuses to make public the numbers and criteria for the permissions that allow new constructions that damage public spaces.
