Albania is concerned by the increasing flux of illegal migrants who enter our country from Greece, with the purpose to enter the EU.

The Albanian PM, Edi Rama, identified this problem during a meeting he had in Vienna with his Austrian counterpart, seeking assistance from the EU to confront this issue.

The Austrian Prime Minister, Sebastian Kurz, expressed his readiness to help. Valuing the efforts of Albania, he spoke about financial support from the EU as well.

“There is a new wave of illegal migration from Balkan. Traffickers try to take people from Greece to Europe through Albania. We need to fight this phenomenon. The number of refugees is increasing and we need to treat this problem before it takes the proportions of 2015. Albania needs and deserves our support”, Kurz declared.

As for the accession negotiations, Austria has openly declared its support. However, the Chancellor couldn’t tell when Albania would receive the official OK.

“I cannot give you a certain answer. There are some EU countries that find it hard to take this decision, due to internal matters. Albania has made progress with the reforms. I cannot say when this decision will be taken, but Albania is on the right track and the European Commission has made it clear”, he said.
