The much disputed law on Population Registration was approved by the Albanian Parliament with 71 votes in favor and two abstentions, while the opposition was again absent, as warned.

The law passed after applying only some of the amendments proposed by the MPs of Party for Justice, Integration and Unity, what made both of them give abstentions.

The amends that were declared by Mr. Shpetim Idrizi, PJIU leader, the government made only a few additions that according to PJIU MPs will increase the safety of auto-declaration and avoid abuses. One of these measures is the fact that these data will be used only for statistical reasons, while INSTAT was obliged by law, after a PJIU proposal, to verify the data that were declared by the individuals.

According to PJIU, this would avoid possible abuses and frauds with the nationality. PJIU imposed other amends on the article that obliges participants to give a full and precise answer, or they would be fined with 100.000 ALL.

However, the refusal of some other PJIU requests obliged this party to give abstention, making the law to be approved with the minimal limit of 71 votes from the majority. PJIU MPs warned that they will closely supervise the process. The population data collection process is expected to start this autumn, and according to Minister Pollo, it fulfills all European standards.
