EU intermediates for opposition’s return in Parliament

The second day of the meetings at the European Parliament between the
President of the left-centered group, Pitella; the rapporteur for
Albania, Fleckenstein and the rapporteur  at the European Popular
Parties, Eduard Kukan, focused on reaching a compromise with the ruling
majority for returning the opposition in Parliament. These European
Parliament representatives were contacted during these months by
Democratic Party exponents.

“The main message is that we want to support the work of Tirana for getting closer to the European Union. For this reason, I think that it is important for the opposition to return in Parliament. There are propositions which I will discuss with the other colleagues today, with the hope to see the Democratic Party inside the Parliament by the end of this month”, declared Knut Fleckenstein, rapporteur for Albaia.

A five-point platform has been proposed in this meeting. Although a bit different from the other list of requests shown by the opposition so far, shows their concern for the “decriminalization of the parliament”.

Confidential sources say for Top Channel that “Rama agreed with everything that doesn’t fall against the country’s constitution”. The first point of the draft requires the return of the opposition in Parliament until the last session of this year. Then they expressed the need for a draft-law o the decriminalization of Parliament within January, which should be approved with consensus in the first semester of 2015. Finally, the European Parliament plays a mediating role for the negotiations between the parties. They invite the Commission to give their expertise for the best practice and for monitoring the implementation.

While the Socialist Party confirmed the mandating of the German Social-Democrat Fleckenstein as mediator for the negotiations, the European Popular Parties are waiting for an answer by the Democratic Party for the intermediation of Eduard Kukan. If this will be confirmed by the leader of the European Popular Parties, Weber, this Wednesday, the European Parliament will publish the stance for the intermediation between the parties in Tirana with the blessing of President Schultz and the leaders of the two main political groups (Weber and Pitella). Otherwise, the representatives of the European Parliament say that they will not deal with the boycott and concerns of the Albanian opposition.
