Tourism failure in Durres

The standards and services, the dirty water, the lack of public beaches, the electoral year and the lack of infrastructure were some of the main causes that brought the loss of millions of Euros and increased unemployment.

The head of the Albanian Tourism Association for Durres, Eduart Xhepa, mentioned the factors that damaged the tourist season most, including the service standards.

“There have been some investigations, but are not enough. We need a marketing campaign in many directions, and this needs investments, organization and dedication for achieving a result”, Xhepa declared.

But for the Mayor of Durres, Vangjush Dako, the unsuccessful season must be seen from a positive point of view that aims to approach Durres with the elite tourist destination.

“This decrease of the number of visitors, especially from Kosovo, happened because they prefer southern Albania most. The new highway made them come faster, and visit Durres only for the weekend. I think that this decrease will make Durres a calmer beach, and the price increase will make it more elite”, Dako declared.

Regardless the investments, the reality that Durres offers in infrastructure and service quality makes this aspect to bee seen as very far in the future.

“There have been investments each year, but this time we were unable to realize them and we had an unsuccessful season, as result. Next year we will start the new investments for the new tourist year”, Dako declared.

But it seems that the solution will not be found for the next year either. Uncontrolled sewage waters are still pouring in the seawater, and the hotel owners are the ones who have caused this absurd situation, which is devaluating their own investments. Even next year, no one would like to bathe in an area filled with sewage water and heavy smell.
