German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, expressed her support to the opening of EU accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia, during a meeting with her Croatian counterpart, Andrej Plenkovic.

Merkel said she was in favor of opening the negotiations with both countries at the same time, (Albania and North Macedonia).

“Albania has fulfilled the conditions that we set, especially as regards the vetting process. Now it is time to open the negotiations”, she said.

Merkel reminded that North Macedonia has also completed the condition that had blocked the negotiations so far, the agreement with Greece regarding its name.

“If we want to be far, we need to treat both countries the same way, although they will be following different procedures”, the German Chancellor declared.

Merkel said that after failing to reach an agreement last year, the cases will now be discussed at the EU Council that will be held in Brussels this March.
