The Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Kotzias, declared in ain interview for Euractiv that Europe must keep its word for Macedonia and Albania, expressing this way the support of Greece for Albania’s EU accession negotiations.

“We need to convince Germany and French so that we can avoid further destabilization of Balkan”, said the head of the Greek diplomacy.

“I told my counterparts, they should be as strict as they want. But we will not this perspective. If there is no accession date for Northern Macedonia, all of our sacrifices, with compromises from both sides, may be put in danger. If only one of the countries start the negotiations, and let’s say, Albania is left outside, there would be a sense of destabilization in the region. If some countries have issues with Northern Macedonia or Albania, they should have said it earlier. Now there is a report of the Commission and a proposition for reviewing the opening of the accession negotiations. We have reached this point and we should do it. Europe must keep its word. Germany should be more open in its propositions with Macron, or at least they should answer for the future of Europe. I think that we need more clarity from Germany. France should also accept to open these accession negotiations, keeping in mind the positive stance that Berlin needs to show. We must not be divided in two camps, in winners and losers. We need to promote the Euroepan vision”, Kotzias said.

As for the negotiations with Albania, the Greek Foreign Minister is optimistic for resolving the remaining issues. However, he says, opposition parties in both countries should not act hysterically.
