Political risks on the rise in Balkan

The Italian Institute for Political Studies (ISPI), founded in 1934 and
specialized in international matters, underlines that the political risk
in Balkan has been increasing, fruit of nationalistic, ethnic,
religious and territorial conflicts.

The risk is higher in Kosovo, according to ISPI, then followed by Bosnia, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria and Montenegro. The risk is connected to the presence of heterogenous destabilization factors in different geographic locations.

ISPI sees as indicator the recent elections which have been problematic and with contested results. But there are also territorial disagreements in Kosovo and Bosnia as well.

The increased political risk and a slowdown of the EU integration might keep foreign investors away from Balkan.

These political, ethnic and territorial divisions have also slowed down the EU path of serveral Balkan countries. This would put at risk the realization of major constructions planned for the region, such as the Trans-Balkan pipeline for natural gas and other infrastructure projects planned by the EU.

The political strategy of Balkan countries and the role of EU will be key elements to the perspective of the region. This is why clear economic strategies and more political commitment is needed as regards reforms that could improve the business climate.

On the other hand, the evolution of relations with Europe will be a key element for accelerating or slowing down the EU integration for the years to come.
