On the World Press Freedom Day, a group of people who work in different
media outlets in Tirana gathered to protest in front of the Albanian
Parliament.
The Union of Journalists invited their colleagues to protest, and appealed media owners to treat with dignity those who are part of the fourth estate, since in most of the cases journalists and reporters work without a work contract and are paid badly, and in many cases their salaries are delayed by months.
“We must raise our voice for the difficult financial situation that has affected almost 90% of the Albanian media, the international media and even local ones”, declared the head of the Journalists’ Union, Aleksander Cipa.
Cipa added that those who are not paid are not part of the protest, because they receive pressures from their owners if they react badly about their situation.
Cipa emphasized that politics is withholding the media freedom each day more, bringing them to the bottom and poverty. Cipa asked for solidarity from all the media outlets for this situation.
“For the institutions to take our requests in consideration, and for hundreds of journalists who have lost their jobs, who work in undeclared jobs although they have an experience of 20 years in the market, you must leave blank columns in your newspaper in order to respect our integrity on behalf of freedom”, Cipa declared.
