The World Federation of Trade Unions held a conference at the European
Parliament in Brussels, where Albania was represented by Valentin Macaj.
The head of the Police Service Union reported that the Albanian government has been rejecting for years the implementation of collective job agreement, adding that the country also suffers from the lack of a series of basic social rights.
“The Prison Police has not received a new service uniform for the past six years, as the law requires. They have not been receiving food treatment for the last seven years, as the law requires; and have not received transport compensation for the past eight years. The prison police is not paid for the job experience; they do not receive the annual bonus, the 13th payment. The lack of a collective agreement has removed even the basic rights of our members, although they have been recognized by law”, Macaj declared.
Macaj also reported the pressure for votes and for participating in electoral campaigns.
“Only a few days ago I reported the fact that the prison directors have started pressuring our members to participate in electoral meetings, to declare their votes and the number of family votes. Not only that they haven’t answered to our legal requests, but they have pressured us even more by reporting us at court, to scare us and to discourage us in our profession”, Macaj underlined.
Macaj shared the same concerns even during the meetings that were held with some Parliament Members that are following the developments in Albania on terrain.
