Tirana Municipality receives transparency award

The Municipality of Tirana won the Transparency Award at a ceremony organized by Infocip, for Monitoring 2017.

The Award was handed over to Mayor Erion Veliaj for the best model he implemented, marking the most dynamic growth, from 2016 to 2017, for the implementation of the local government law.

“When I took this duty, the first year, they told me that I had received a 4 out of 10. I had just arrived at the Municipality. The website didn’t even work properly, let alone installing an Q&A protocol, or get any bigger job done. We couldn’t even dream about creating an opendata portal that goes beyond the five characteristics that were evaluated, or even an application such as Tirana Ime, which has taken the communication and problem-resolving abilities to another problem. We could have been using this energy insulting each other, or we could use it lik this, a municipality that received 4/10 not gets 9.9. We need 10, but that will be a challenge for the next year”, Veliaj said.

The Mayor said that the Tirana Ime application has established a new standard. “We have 11.000 reports a year, and problems resolved just by the Tirana Ime application, which now has other options as well, such as parking payment etc. For the first half of 2017 only we’ve had more than 5000 requests. We would be ready to offer this platform for free to other municipalities”, Veliaj said.

Tirana is the first city in Albania with a database for public works and services that the municipality offers. This is part of the transparency process, but also for better managing the time and money of taxpayers.
