40 years ago, the political prisoners in the infamous Spac prison rose
into an anticommunist revolt that ended after a few days, with the
execution of several of the prisoners.
The former prisoners and their relatives returned in the Spac prison, now turned into a wrack, and visited the rooms where they suffered tortures in their youth.
“I spent 11 years in prison. I was tortured in the room and the gallery too. We were the slaves of communists”, says Perikli Shqevi, former political prisoner.
“There were a lot of tortures. We have suffered and we never thought we’d come out alive. God helped us and today we are watching the places where we endured those sufferings”, says Vllasi Koci, former political prisoner.
“We appeal all the political prisoners to join these men and women who have come here today to commemorate the sufferings of the communist system, so that the dictatorship cannot be reproduced in Albania, and the martyrs can receive the values they deserve”, declared Keti Bazhdari, leader of the Socialist Party working group for the politically persecuted people.
The prisoners kept the camp until May 24th 1973, when additional forces from Tirana brought the revolt down.
“Socialist Party will give a final solution to the problem of the former political prisoners in Albania. We will return their dignity and will return their moral and social integration”, Bazhdari declared.
The prisoners were executed after a 13 hour long trial. Present in this ceremony were many of the former political prisoners who held a hunger strike a few months ago.
