Thousands of liters of used car oils, considered a dangerous
waste material, enter Albania each year through 366 import companies.
These subjects should complete a full recycling of the oils before launching it in the market, but none of them is doing this in Albania, since they don’t have the necessary staff and technology. The Director of Control at the Ministry of Education, Alfred Deshati, underlines that the risk of these waste materials is very high, and their usage is suspicious.
“We don’t have any implant for treating and recycling this oil. By not recycling it, as the law requires, it ends up in other directions, such as furnaces, bakeries, gas stations and business companies that pave roads and make mixtures of every kind. The destination is not changing, but this dangerous material is being abused with”, Deshati declared.
The cost of one kilogram of used car oil is 30-40 ALL, and some of it is mixed with fuels and is abusively sold to car owners. After combustion, this oil damages the vehicles and also the environment, due to the toxic fumes.
“If you pour this dangerous material in a canal or bury it underground, every living thing around it will die. The businesses who treat these oils lack of the qualified staff”, Deshati declared.
Importers should bring all the documentation that verifies the way how it will be transported and recycled. These documents are missing most of the time, bringing strong suspicions about a corruptive network based on profit and that violates all legal rules.
