The Parliament has agreed with the Albanian Public Television (TVSH) to
keep feeding free signal to media outlets for the Parliament sessions.
This Thursday the TVSH suddenly decided to stop offering the signal, claiming that TV stations had been notified, which wasn’t true.
This action was condemned by the opposition as a political act. Former DP leader, Sali Berisha, said that this is a severe attack against the free speech in Parliament.
However, the signal will not be free for long. The Parliament confirmed the project mentioned by Prime Minister Rama for creating a Parliament TV channel which will secure its own service for the media.
The Parliament says this project is a final solution which will secure visual access to media outlets during parliamentary sessions.
However, the Press Office confirms that the cameras will not be allowed inside the Parliament, and outlets will broadcast only the footage offered by the Public television.
This creates an ethical and anti-constitutional problem, according to several human right specialists, who say it goes against the right for information and parliamentary transparency.
This decisions should at least be taken after consulting the media first.
