The first victim of AH1N1, the swine flu, has been recorded in Albania. A
30-year-old woman from Fier died in the Tirana Sanatorium, after being
treated for two days at the hospital.
“A young woman arrived with acute respiratory insufficiency and high fever. She had been diabetic since she was nine. The virus had affected all vital organs. The patient passed away regardless of the intensive treatment”, declared Dr.Alma Cani, head of the Sanatorium Reanimation.
While there is a flux of patients in clinics and health centers, 433 samples of patients suspected for this virus have been sent to the Public Health Institution. 245 have been registered only in February.
57 samples resulted with the virus, 31 with AH3 and 26 with AH1. Public Health Director, Arjan Bregu, says that there is no room for panic, while he gave some advice for a better protection.
“We are counting 16.500 cases this week, 5% more than the same period of the last year. There is an intensive circulation of the flu virus in this situation. The seasonal flu is directly transmitted from an affected person to a healthy one through coughs, sneezes or indirect touches through hand shakes or other physical contacts. The virus is also spread from the air particles which go through the throat, the nose and increase for four days”, Bregu declared.
One of the main advises is vaccination, more hygienic measures and avoiding of crowded closed areas. A special care is needed for young children and chronic patients.
